Review of Coming to America (1988) by Christian B — 26 Dec 2012
In this film, an African prince named Akeem Joffer( Eddie Murphy), is all set to be introduced to his future bride on his 21st birthday. Akeem meets his bride at a large celebration with his father the king (James Earl Jones), his mother the Queen, and many citizens of the kingdom. After she is introduced to Akeem however, he is displeased that she is more robotic than an actual human being whom he may share with. Akeem decides instead of marrying this women, to travel to New York City with his friend and assistant, Semmi( Aresenio Hall), to find his perfect bride. Akeem and Semmi arrive in New York to find that the culture around them is much different to that of royalty as they face a difficult challenge of adapting to the American culture, and finding Akeem's perfect bride.
Coming To America is a good all around film. It is funny, has an intriguing romantic appeal, and shows a young Eddie Murphy at his best(as he was the one who wrote the script to the movie). The film will keep your attention and keep you laughing, as it shows the principals to dating, social class, and love in America in the eyes of visitors from overseas.
I thought Coming To America was a solid movie. Not perfect, but solid and worth the watch. It is rated R for sexual content, language, racism, and some crude humor.
