Going into this film, the audience expects a quirky, comedic, indie spin on the monster movie genre. Suffice it to say that it achieves that goal in spades, and, without spoiling key plot points, transcends that premise to become a remarkable allegory for dark, uncomfortable themes, as experienced by the main character portrayed by Anne Hathaway.
The viewer endures that winding journey alongside her and comes out feeling that same sense of empowerment.
