I went into this movie completely blind outside of hearing some positive reviews about it. i'm glad I did because I came in with low expectations and what I saw really surprised me. Colossal is a dark comedy that follows an alcoholic named Gloria (Anne Hathaway) who is kicked out of her boyfriend Tim's (Dan Stevens) apartment because she's kinda a mess.

Gloria has been unemployed for over a year, drinks every day, stays in all day with friends and truthfully is kinda a piece of shit. She moves back to her home town where she runs into an old friend named Oscar (Jason Sudeikis).

Oscar gets Gloria a job at his bar and soon enough she's back at it again drinking late at night and sleeping on a blow up mattress. SPOILER ALERT. Ok just wanted to say I'm gonna spoil this a bit.

During this whole time a giant monster appears over Seoul, Korea destroying people and killing some. Gloria is shocked by this, but here's the slight twist. Once again SPOILER. Don't read on past this if you don't want the plot ruined.

It turns out everyday at 8:05 AM when Gloria crosses through a park SHE actually is controlling the giant monster. It's really strange, but it works well. I enjoyed the film diving into how people can hide away from their real pain and it really depends on the person and their true nature to shine through when they are gifted with something special.

The film has a lot of little metaphors and meanings which I even now am thinking about. There's definitely some pro female vibes here especially when one character is truly shown who they are. There's a lot of kind of figuring out who you are and what you can do.

It's hard to explain, but I really enjoyed this one. I won't ruin anymore, but I will say it's a film about shitty people and how some people embrace that shittiness and how some people realize they're shitty and move past it to finally improve themselves.

Definitely, give this one a look!
