Review of Colossal (2017) by Brandon W — 09 Sep 2017
Colossal is directed and written by Nacho Vigalondo, and it stars Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis in a monster black comedy science fiction about an alcoholic that was kicked out of her boyfriend's house, and so Gloria (Anne Hathaway) move back to her hometown, which unexpectedly, brings out a monster in Seoul, Korea that's controlled by her in every footstep, destroying buildings and civilians.
With an indie director making a premise that's very odd with a bunch of well known actors, got me curious on that alone. So with that said, let's get on to this strange film. Anne Hathaway is having a lot of fun in this, and so are the other actors that are in this.
The monster effects look really good, and they are a lot of fun to watch some destruction from the monster's unintentional havoc. The comedy is well done which is thanks to Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, and Tim Blake Nelson who have comedic timing.
The main issue that I have, which is a big one, was Sudeikis's character turn in the middle of the film. It felt so out of nowhere where he was likable in the first act, now becomes unlikable and unpleasant to watch in the second half that it took me out of the film for a bit, and that it felt like a way to have some conflict in the film.
Now I was starting to get used to it in the last act as Jason Sudeikis does a great job of acting like an unlikable person with some dimensional characterization to him, but I felt like some of the damage was already done to this film.
I still thought Colossal is a great film nonetheless, but some of the unexpected unpleasantness in the second act was not something that I didn't quite want in a strange film like this.
