Review of Colonia (2016) by David S — 28 Jul 2016
Emma Watson (post Hermione Granger), again trying to push her way further into the Hollywood elite. Before you get carried away on a sea of Harry Potter nostalgia, this is not the film that will be remembered for carrying our favorite Mudblood to those upper echelons. However, this art house piece gives us some joy in it's production without ever reducing us to chills.
Colonia is based on the Chilean-based, German-run cult that was formed and operated through the mid 60s to this day. At it's peak, it was a global disturbance due to the allegations of abuse, torture, and the reputation that no one ever successfully escaped.
Watson and Bruhl give us their talents without ever convincing us of their true chemistry, and Michael Nyqvist (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is a sinister antagonist. There are some neck-cringing moments, and there are some neck-dropping moments. All in all, you get some information about a cult, some people that escaped (of course), and a mediocre display of semi-biographical plot.
Keep trying Emma, we're rooting for you.
