The realm of placing philosophies of emotions and abstract concepts in the center of a human drama is a tricky tightrope to walk, and Collateral Beauty simply doesn't cross, even if it thinks it does.
The tone is inconsistent, the ridiculous twists don't fit, and most of the complex messages it tries to say are lost in the attempts by its distinguished actors to make sense out of them.
