Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Nick S — 24 Mar 2010
WOW my hat off to paul giamatti who plays himself which doesn't sound hard but man he killed it. I knew I liked him but after this movie he is a definitive "hall of fame" actor in my book.
The way he acts out the different ways while having a soul, being soulless, having someone elses soul...but also while he's acting in the movie while having his soul, being soulless and having someone elses soul was phenomenal.
So many great quirky dark comedic moments that his timing was impeccable on. I wouldn't say this is a comedy but there are some funny moments. The story is very existential and gets a bit deep near the end, "searching for your soul" but thats because it was stolen, literally.
They always say music is best when u don't notice it...well I noticed the music and it just fit perfectly for each piece is was supporting. The ending is very ambiguous which I tend to like, but I didn't think this movie needed an ambiguous ending, but all in all a good one.
His character develops nicely which makes for a slow pace but a great climax at the end. Also the story is rather absurd and sci-fyish, but everyone plays there parts so seriously that u believe this is happening.
Paul Giamatti = phenomenal.
