Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Cory W — 11 Apr 2010
Somebody call Charlie Kaufman because I believe we've found his brainchild. This strange but satisfying comedy follows Paul Giamatti (as himself) as he stores his soul in order to loosen himself for a play role, but when Russian soul-traffickers "borrow" his soul, he embarks on a journey to get it back.
The humor in this is not the usual "ha-ha" one liners a comedy has. The joke here is the whole movie. The subtle humor of the situations Giamatti has to go through are pretty dern funny. I will say watching the film brings back memories of "Being John Malkovitch", but I enjoyed this more than the latter.
This movie will get a bit strange at times, and the ending is a tad bit hard to understand, but the film itself is a fresh, original plot that is boosted by a fantastic performance by Giamatti (He should have gotten GG comedy nod for it).
Overall, the film is a Kaufman-esque comedy that elevates itself with originality and humor.
