Review of Cold Mountain (2003) by Mark K — 07 Dec 2008
A strange case: a good film in many ways, except that every major role is miscast. Only one American among the four main actors. Kidman is typically dreadful, Winstone despite being one of the greatest cannot do an accent other than his native Cockney, Law is relatively good in this but should never be cast in anything on principle, and Zellwegger is a clown, though she is at least Southern, kind of.
Natalie Portman is also awful, though not one of the main actors. The casting makes sense when you consider the melodramatic dimension of the film (as opposed to the awesome, albeit incidental, depiction of the realities of the war), the fantastical love story at the heart of it, and the predictable, formulaic 'tragic' ending.
