Review of Cold in July (2014) by Kristi M — 16 Mar 2015
Cold in July is pulpy and surprisingly convincing even when it goes all twisty. When it starts it seems like a psychological study of "Mr. Good Guy" who wouldn't hurt a fly accidentally shoots an intruder and the intruder's Dad comes to town to avenge his son's death seeking eye for an eye.
This sort of plot can play on through the movie to the inevitable showdown but in Cold in July this is where it twists into a totally new direction that feels like a whole other move. While the plot never really gets wrapped up nice and neat it managed to keep me interested and unable to really predict what happens next until it gets toward the end.
It's still a character study of Mr Good Guy" and his "coming of age" of sorts into worldly wisdom changes how he sees the world including the relationship with his son. It's B movie quality with understated performances and some dark humor that questions right and wrong and if doing what seems right makes you a criminal.
