Review of Coffy (1973) by Frog B — 20 Jan 2010
While this movie is significant historically in the Blaxploitation sub-genre of film, it is noteworthy of its historical significance to film in general. It not only kick-started Pam Griers career as an actress, it was also the first movie to star a strong female arc-type of color.
Not only is she able to seek revenge but she also has a full time job as a nurse. In contrast to Foxxy Brown, Coffy is a more rounded character. Foxxy Brown is just as capable of seeking vengeance, however it's never made clear as to what Brown's occupation is.
My only complaint about "Coffy" and I wish there was more attention drawn to this, is that when watching this movie, be prepared to see some nudity and a whole lot of it. I don't mind some, but it didn't need to be there that often.
Thankfully the action scenes were done well enough and there was enough of them that in the end, it balanced out. In conclusion, if you like Blaxploitation films this would certainly be the "Braveheart" of the genre, so be sure to check it out.
