Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (1987) by Harpreet S — 17 Apr 2012
Out of the eleven short stories in Jim Jarmusch's "Coffee and Cigarettes," my favorite would have to be "Cousins?" or "Somewhere in California," clearly two of the funniest and cleverest.
By no means is this a great film, several of the other short stories seem like practices, with about half being pointless and off-putting. This is the only film of Jarmusch I've seen that fails to produce a resonating feeling in me.
Performances I admired were of Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Steve Buscemi, Cate Blanchett, Alfred Molina, and Steve Coogan. The whole film seems like an unfinished work ridden with clumsiness. "Stranger than Paradise" might have been about nothing, but it certainly worked.
All in all, there are more negatives than positives, yet a fine film to view once. Is Jim Jarmusch trying to tell us that coffee and cigarettes aren't really a great combination?
