Review of Coco Before Chanel (2009) by Ina S — 26 May 2010
Tame film about Coco Chanel's early years that spoils the potential of the perfectly cast and stunning Audrey Tautou by giving her little material of substance to work with. Chanel's life surely would have offered more opportunity for storytelling - this film somewhat leaves the audience with the feeling that Chanel was made by and hugely dependent on men, a conclusion that doesn't do her justice at all.
Great acting and fantastic costumes save the otherwise dire movie from absolute disaster. An extra star for the truly wonderful lead actress. Maybe they can cast her in a sequel?
