Strong, controlled visual storytelling. Tautou delivers a tantalizing performance via Fontaine, whom is tactful in her direction/writing; careful to foreshadow (in each scene) how Coco will eventually become the Icon.
Remember... this IS a story about Coco BEFORE she becomes famous.
