Review of Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) by John A — 06 Jun 2007
Sissy Spacek is in fine form as country crooner Loretta Lynn, and the rest of the film builds on the strengths of Spacek's acting. Tommy Lee Jones is also effective as Lynn's dotty husband, and the story is engaging, if not somewhat simplistic.
This is a good look into the music scene of the 70's and 80's, as it takes a different approach from previous music-themed films. We see more of the personal life of Lynn, which is a refreshing change of pace.
We see how a simple, slow lifestyle can, at the same time, be meaningful and engaging. This is an underappreciated character film which should not be missed. Be warned that it is somewhat dated.
