Review of Clueless (1995) by Sydney V — 04 Feb 2011
Gosh, I loved this movie growing up and I love it just the same today. Who would've thought an updated adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma" would be so cute, and better than the snore-worthy version starring Gwyneth Paltrow? This movie completely exemplifies the 90s and when I was growing up. It hasn't lost its appeal, more than 15 years later. It's still so funny and now that I'm an adult I can appreciate the brazen satire that I missed when I was so young. And it's still relevant in these days, with shows like "The Hills" and every other VH1/MTV reality show that centers around pampered, shallow upper-class young folks. However, unlike those shows the main character in this movie changes for the better.
The characters here are all terrific and engaging, including the solid supporting cast. Alicia Silverstone is just adorable in every scene she's in and Paul Rudd is incredibly cute as her sweet step-bro, Josh. The dialogue is incredibly funny and sharp from everyone. Every situation/adventure that Cher and her pals gets into is woven seamlessly into the main plot. The story never sags or drags. Every random moment the movie presents--from driving tests, to mall trips, even to armed robbery-- just feels like it belongs in the story and doesn't take anything away from the main storyline. It's kind of hard for me to express. The moments are all amusing and entertaining.
It's a perfect teen comedy-- and many people didn't know those existed.
