Review of Clueless (1995) by Kevin M — 19 Jun 2017
I didn't thought I would love this movie as much as I did, but it's great! Clueless is a funny, relatable and smart written movie. It has a non stereotypical plot (well, except for the Cher and Josh relationship) and a main character that I'm not afraid to call one of the best of cinema.
Writer/Director Amy Heckerling and Alicia Silverstone create an amazing, relatable and tridimensional character in Cher Horowitz. And it's pretty obvious this movie was written and directed by a woman, because Cher is a non-stereotypical, non-hollow and non-oversexualized character.
It has layers that are quite different from each other, but that totally make sense for a real human being. And, although at times Cher feels like a too-good-to-be-true-character, you completely believe Alicia's performance.
She is charming, witty, beautiful and complex and, most importantly, it feels real. This is not a male-fantasy of what a woman should or shouldn't be and it's not a sterotypical or archetypical character (it starts like that, but throughout the movie it breaks away from the mold) and it is a fresh breath of air in the teen and rom-com genre.
I wish there were more characters like Cher Horowitz. It also has one of the greatest (if not the greatest) father-daughter relationships I have ever seen in cinema and a great range of secondary characters.
Needless to say, the production design is iconic and amazing. All of Cher's outfits are stunning and emphasize Silverstone's natural beauty without over-sexualizing her. In sum, this is an amazing movie, with a witty script, a great set of characters, and an iconic production design.
Definitely deserves the title of classic.
