Review of Clue (1985) by Ryan S — 11 Jun 2016
I'm going to go ahead and tell you that my rating only reflects my personal enjoyment and my genuine love for this movie. If you didn't grow up watching Clue then you probably won't get it or enjoy it as much as I do.
This is the original board game movie (before Battleship came along), and I'd say they did a fantastic job with it. Sure they could have done a literal translation of the game and made it a tongue-in-cheek murder mystery, but instead they chose to also make it a comedy.
It works wonderfully, even if the plot and its resolution doesn't really pan out. The enjoyment of the movie is for its performances and characters, which it has in spades. It features an all-star ensemble cast with fantastic performances from Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn and Michael McKean, not to mention Christopher Lloyd, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren and Colleen Camp.
There's also a couple of pseudo cameo appearances by Jane Wieldin and Howard Hesseman. The tone of the film is solid and fantastic and the whole thing still holds up well to this day even if the jokes don't quite hit their mark every time.
It's one of my favorite movies and always leaves me with a smile on my face.
