Review of Club Dread (2004) by M R — 25 Apr 2010
So, in an effort to see as many movies as I could this weekend, which is currently only turning out to be a rousing TWO movies, I saw Club Dread early Saturday morning.
The theater itself was already packed, and it was fairly obvious where everyone was going. Some people were even dressed up as if they were going to church. So, whatever. I however was part of that publicity bandwagon the day before, and was now going to see the movie I originally wanted to see, Club Dread. Comedy? Horror? From the people who brought us a movie I never saw? Sure! Sign me up.
It was fun.
And, maybe that's the kiss of death for a movie. "Meh. It was fun." is never the kind of review you want in the publicity material. But, I didn't think it was astounding. It was fun.
It also ran a little bit long in my opinion during the third act. It was such a great build up, and then...snail's pace.
I thought the horror conventions they did make fun of, were hilarious jokes. The repeated fake scare at the beginning. The way the villian would NEVER die. The nudity. The GYMNAST nudity. All hilarious. They even forced you to think it could be anyone killing people on the island, with these goofy musical queues as the beginning.
I just think that if they shortened the run time a bit, the movie would have been even tighter, and the movie would have ended up being THAT much more fun.
And, in the name of losing any female readers...Brittany Daniel? Yum.
