Review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013) by Liam C — 07 Jun 2014
For an unnecessary sequel, I'd say this one was actually pretty good. Unlike most sequels where it starts off some time later with a different scenario happening, this movie literally takes place moments after the first one, which is nice and actually feels like a continuation as opposed to adding to.
I'm not sure what the critics are talking about here, given the introduction of the 'foodimals', I'd say that the level of creative ideas in this movie is the same as or even more creative than its predecessor, I mean foodimals?! Who came up with that? The person who I saw this with said 'they must have been on drugs when they thought up this'.
The film does pretty much no wrong in it's graceful runtime, the level of animation, character and visual design of this film is exactly the same as it's predecessor and if someone out there, who probably already has done, could splice both movies together, you would not notice a difference.
As soon as the film started there was some sort of intrigue, I knew one of the characters wasn't all he seemed to be and for a little bit there's a tiny grey area where you're not sure if he's one thing or another, but like most films like this it's very predictable but that doesn't mean it's bad.
It's charming, funny and treats it's characters with respect and adds to them and it feels like you're meeting old friends again, except Mr. T not returning and given the fact his character is given more to do this time, it's quite strange.
I have been comparing the two a bit and granted at this moment in time, when I submit this review, I have not done a review for the previous film and that's because I wasn't reviewing movies at that point in time, but they're both just as good as each other even if the previous films comedy worked a little bit better but that's not saying much, the comedy is funny and not cheesy and some of the foodimals are just so sweet and innocent they look good enough to eat, no pun intended.
Amazing sequel that not only doesn't take anything away from the original, it honors it and adds to it. Lets hope, if they decide to make a third one, they know what they're doing still.
