Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Maksim B — 01 Dec 2013
Pretentious, visually dazzling and thought-provoking, Cloud Atlas is a demanding and awkward cinematographic experience which could not be advised to all audiences. Rewarding for some, confusing for others and probably boring for thirds, this adaption of David Mitchell's novel is a strange blend of philosophical essay, action, drama and romance, and it could be said with certainty that it is not for all audiences.
Writing a review on this movie and describing its story is as difficult as watching it, simply because the structures and the messages conveyed are scattered in six sub-stories, six time frames of the human history and different inter-connections between them. The complexity of the story and ideas of the directing trio Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis are still confusing days after the final credits of their delivery. At moments unfocused and with a very slow start, Cloud Atlas still manages to find its way to the viewers' minds and hearts with the simplicity of its main messages. Among all the structural story complexity, it is the idea of kindness and goodness that in a simple and touching way is conveyed to the audience.
Overloaded by the stunning visuals, formidable actors make up and confusing story, many would probably not pay attention to the cast and the main performances. Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, Halle Berry and Hugo Weaving are Hollywood heavyweights who know how to match expectations and their versatile performances as different characters are absolutely pleasing. On the funny side of the story, Weaving does a terrific performance as the scary nurse in the retirement institution.
In conclusion, I am still confused about Cloud Atlas: by its story, by its ideas, by the performances in it. I assume that this cinematographic gem is not for every taste and should be approached with the correct attitude and expectations. Despite some flaws, the slow beginning and the fact that it turned into an absolutely financial bomb for its studio, Cloud Atlas is one of those awkward movies, which will stay in your mind long after seeing it.
