Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Jamie E — 14 Feb 2014
Visually stellar, Cloud Atlas captivates the audiences with its complex and intriguing plot allowing for some diverse areas of society to be explored. Cast brilliantly with substance and class, the Waschowski's deep specific direction gives the actors the surreal landscapes to create performances of landmark quality.
This film's rich script drips with emotion and thought, love and grace and overall intelligence. Cloud Atlas does not seem to be scared of moving into hazardous themes of of race, culture and religion giving the audience a platter of visual treats that the Wachowskis are known to be able to deliver with their handling of universal ideas and themes.
But it doesn't dim in character devlopement in order to show off these visuals but has a balance of both. Its scope broadens with each line of dialogue and each beat of the beautiful track. Audiences will fall into a trap with Cloud Atlas, while it may be bordering on way to long and too complicated for some of the more relaxed movie goers this film has a story of such wild scope that it can try to become so close to perfect with its gleaming elegance and wit.
Cloud Atlas wont appeal to all and may stuff everything in front of you, on a beautiful dish, but it has Drama, comedy, romance and action, all the ingredients of a classic film.
