Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Isadore H — 12 Feb 2016
Cloud Atlas has one of the most massive story lines I have ever seen in film, and has an appropriately long run time to it as well. This movie it suffers a little bit from the sheer size, but is still handled pretty well.
The scenery is beautiful, as well as the special effects. The acting in this one is pretty great all around, with multiple actors playing several roles and doing a great job at portraying them. Tom Hanks native valley man, Hugo Weavings demon and Xun Zhou's waitress all made memorable characters.
The problem is that the directors bit off a little more than they could chew. Several points in the movie had me confused, and the mosaic plot is a bit hard to follow. It was fascinating to see how each of the stories fit together at the end.
Essentially, Cloud Atlas is maybe a little too big and confusing, but the great beauty and scope of this film are hard to brush off. Only watch if you're prepared to pay close attention for up to three hours.
