Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Robert L — 16 Oct 2012
The characters are too distantly drawn to really connect with, dragging Close Encounters down just a bit for me. But the Spielbergian sense of wonder is on full blast, and there's enough mystery and timeless spectacle to really elevate it.
It's clearly evident that Spielberg cared about the story, which is a mix of otherworldly obsession (think JG Ballard or HP Lovecraft) and wide focused Arthur C Clarke style alien encounter (mostly incomprehensible, as it ought to be).
Richard Dreyfus is phenomenal, even if his character ain't really sympathetic or fun. And the whole climax is surely among the greatest moments found in cinema.
