Review of Cloak & Dagger (1984) by Andy G — 09 Mar 2009
I have very vivid memories of certain moments of this film because it gave me a childhood worth of nightmares. Of course, from an adult perspective and compared to current films, this is extremely tame.
But I think ultimately what was so frightening is that the children in the film are placed in such danger. The spies are not just trying to get their secrets back - they are trying to kill the children in cold blood.
The film is definitely dated. The acting, plot, and action sequences all seem stilted today. And the main prop of the film is a video game of Cloak and Dagger, which seems incredibly archaic when placed next to Rock Band or Grand Theft Auto.
The film is entertaining at times, mostly for the nostalgia aspect. But the spy story doesn't hold up today and the father-son subplot is a bit abrupt and sentimental. But it's still fun to watch and reminisce.
