Review of Clerks (1994) by Jake W — 24 Jun 2011
The definitive movie for the man who isn't even supposed to be here today. Clerks takes a look at people who don't usually the get to have their stories told and spends a day with them, and those people are the convenience store clerks.
This is Kevin Smith's first movie, and while my opinion of him as a director has certainly dwindled as his career has continued (or as I have grown up, one or the other), his debut still holds up and is one of my favorites.
The script is tightly packed with well-written jokes that are even funnier if you've had a job where you deal with customers on a regular basis. The acting, no, it's nothing to write home about, but the material and the writing more than make up for it.
When you look at the skeleton budget, you can't help but be inspired from an independent filmmaking standpoint; you don't need millions of dollars to get a movie off the ground; all you need is a well-written script, the determination and the grit.
There's something about this that is just comfort food for me, it's still infinitely quotable and I am happy to say that it still holds up 17 years later.
