Review of Clerks (1994) by Maxwell S — 25 Nov 2012
Kevin Smith's second best film, which most people would say that this is, but "Chasing Amy" is his true masterpiece. "Clerks" is just a humorous analysis on the life of clerks. Instantly, before anything really even happens, we barely have any care for the characters, and some may hope that it's just them doing stupid things for 90 minutes.
But, Smith, who sets his love of his dialogue in this film, creates a deep analysis into their lives, without breaking character for a split second. While the fun dialogue, talk about movies or theories, etc.
, is very entertaining, it feels essential to the film, and it's all so timely. Whenever a character does something real, or physical, it doesn't normal for them to do that (them running out of the funeral).
I mean that all we think if them is just great talkers, but we're so into the dialogue, we don't notice every action they make. They all feel like friends, who we revisit occasionally. There are some perfect scenes, but some scene are a mess, but as a whole, it is more than worth of a watch and very well constructed.
