Review of Cleaner (2007) by Erno K — 08 Sep 2008
In pure technical ability, Renny Harlin is still a very good director. That's why it's sad that there are many worse ones working with huge movies even as we speak. Although, technically we don't speak, I just write some shit up and you are bored enough to read it. Kudos to you.
Right off the bat, the best part of the movie is an expression Jackson makes to a kid. That is priceless. He looks pretty stupid when making faces it seems. Secondly, I think the movie is slightly too slow-paced, but at the same time it's so short that it is never a big problem. I liked everything about the direction. There was no fast cuts and the few gimmicks were brief and actually worked. Many directors could learn a bit from this guy.
The story was the weak spot though. I had troubles following it which I hate. But even a lame script can't totally destroy following Jackson as a crime scene cleaner, which I thought was an original angle. Basic movie with an above average direction and cast.
But why the fuck is Peter Franzen in the movie!? I guess he represents the mandatory Finnish shrapnel in all Harlin's movies. A surreal moment was had when I realized who I was looking at. And he gets to go to town on Jackson too! And I mean that purely on a violent level...
