Review of Clash of the Titans (1981) by Karly A — 17 Sep 2009
The filmmakers play around with the myth of Perseus, making some goofy alterations. I don't like the portrayal of the Olympians, as they lack vitality, passion, and muscles, and come across more like bickering aristocrats than powerful gods.
In Greek myth, the gods can certainly be petty and selfish, but they are rarely so dull. I do like how Laurence Olivier's Zeus plays with little figurines of the mortals on a model of a Greek amphitheatre though--a nod at the great thespian's career in Shakespeare.
The largest problem with the film, however, is that Harryhausen's special effects now seem quaint beside the famous actors, big sets, and more lavish costumes and makeup.
