Review of Claire's Knee (1970) by Amy D — 24 Feb 2008
Certainly not the best Rohmer film. Did anyone else catch the two times Aurora looks into the camera? I'm hoping that Rohmer directed her to do that.
This film did win prestigious awards and nominations, but it's just not that exciting. I was able to watch it and stay interested, though I was never wowed by anything.
I love the setting for this film, and that the young Laura seemed more mature in her ideas about love and people than Jerome. I didn't mind the lengthy dialogue, especially between Jerome and Aurora. The psychoanalysis of human desire is interesting. Even the ending is ambiguous. Will Claire make the "moral" decision and dump Gilles? Or were Jerome's games all in vain?
