Review of CJ7 (2008) by Winston A — 19 May 2008
I love it! I have been a Steven Chow fan for life so I may be biased. But still, this is a great movie. The kid can act! Even though he (actually a she) over exaggerates at times, he is still a good choice for the role. As for the special effects, it is no where on par with a Hollywood production but good try nevertheless. The little doggy (CJ7) is cute and very beliveble when interacting with real actors on screen. The thing I like is that CJ7 (the creature) is just a plot tool and not really the main protagonist. Its main use is to highlight the father and son relationship and bring up their main conflict. Well done.
The story is quite straight forward from start to end but it touches on a lot of meaningful topics about parenthood. The father and son relationship is nicely illustrated through mild humour and dramatics. The acting feels geniune and it makes you feel for all the characters throughout.
It is also nice to see a HK movie with a different subject matter than Triad gang members trying killing each other and the always trying to look cool in slow motion stuff they always do over there.
This is a true "feel good" movie that can be enjoyed by all ages. Thumbs up all the way from me! So What's next, Stephen? How about a horror movie?
