Review of City of the Living Dead (1980) by Heather K — 26 Apr 2008
Aww, my very first Ital-Gore flick, and what an entry! I actually originally saw this under the title "The Gates Of Hell" and man does it have some disgustingly wonderful effects. The story is a little confusing and talky which makes parts of the film seem draggy but the gore and the way the plot comes together make up for all of that. It actually lays down most of the ground rules for "The Beyond" which is sort of a follow up with the whole "gates of hell" thing. The two films even share many of the same cast members I believe!
This one actually comes first though, in this story we have a Priest who commits suicide and therefore opens the gates of hell. Then a reporter and a psychic try to find a way to close the gate before it's too late! There is one scene which I'm sure is the most talked about wherein a girl sees the Priest and vomits out her internal organs one by one in graphically disgusting detail. If you like gore this will not let you down, and if it does you are beyond hope. Recommended, but be willing to be patient, it will pay off.
