Review of City of the Living Dead (1980) by Donna D — 19 Sep 2008
The bad: the story is silly, and the movie takes a lot of detours. The dead priest opening the gates of hell is hard to swallow, but then, few people watch low-budget Italian horror movies for great story.
The last act wasn't very satisfying, and the very end just left me confused. On the plus side, we do get the gore for which Fulci is so famous: a rain of maggots, a drill through the brain, a whole lot of skull crushing, and quite a bit of excessive barfing.
I'd say horror fans should give this a gander just for the gore, but I'd recommend Fulci's "Zombi" (aka "Zombi 2") first. Overall, I'd say this is but a footnote in the genre.
