Review of City of Life and Death (2009) by Jeff B — 28 Sep 2011
Very good film from China about the Japanese invasion of the Chinese capital Nanking. It's certainly difficult to watch, it's one of those war films that shows the horrors that that the enemies to the civilians and the captured.
There were a few too many of those moments where someone takes a stand in the middle of a group and the rest slowly follow (surrendering, marching, bowing, etc). And I'm sorry if this sounds racist or stereotyped, but the film's in black and white, the uniforms look the same, there were times when I couldn't tell if I was watching the Chinese or the Japanese.
Because oddly, the way the film is told, the Japanese are the enemy however the main character/protagonist is Japanese. Despite some of its flaws, it's an excellent film and tells a part of history I knew nothing about.
