Review of City of Life and Death (2009) by Koji Y — 25 Nov 2011
Even though there's still a debate if the Nanking massacre actually happened or not, this is one of the greatest WWII dramas I've ever seen. With its beautiful black and white cinematography, Lu Chuan tells the story of Nanking massacre through the eyes of a Japanese soldier.
By depicting the main character, Kadokawa, as a humane vulnerable man, Lu Chuan ended up being labeled as a traitor in China after the release of the film. But the point he's trying to show is pretty clear.
It wasn't the brainless animals who killed thousands of the innocent civilians but it was those human beings with feelings who did, which actually makes it so much worse. This is even harder to watch than "Schindler's List".
