Review of City of Life and Death (2009) by Winnerdoggy A — 13 Jan 2012
For many years this county, meaning the US has lashed and touted the image of the greatest generation, and movies like Saving Private Ryan are direct products of that over inflated image of America's role in WWII.
On closer examination and outside of this isolated and privileged county the world in many places was actually in a state of total war on a scale that had never been experienced before; certainly on a scale that has rarely been examined in film.
Films like City of Life and Death are so rare they are to be watched and understood. We have been and are being constantly led down a military path in this country because we have made it too easy to conduct war; we then act surprised or shocked when we are exposed to any other vision than a sanitary "honorable" course for our military.
War is taken too lightly in this country. War is fought on too many fronts in a perpetual manner that dulls the population into a fatigued sense of bewildered acceptance, and then turns their back and goes and sees another movie, or off to a restaurant to discuss our political outrage or the cost of gas.
This movie puts war into perspective and portrays historical circumstances that we have been steered away from for too long in this country.
