Review of City of God (2002) by Joss D — 21 Aug 2012
Goodfellas meets Pulp Fiction in a dream-like tale of eternal crime and violence. Based on true events, the film is both beautiful and harrowing. Admittedly the characters lack depth, and the film is uneven (particularly the scenes involving the narrator/protagonist) but it deserves its international acclaim and works strongest as a series of vignettes capturing a sun-kissed hell at a time where the only thing worse than being alive is the impending threat of disco music.
