Review of City of God (2002) by Caesar M — 21 Aug 2012
A dynamic fast-paced drama about the slums in brazil. absolutely thrilling and chilling at the same time. One of the most violent and disturbing movies I've ever seen, seriously kids just killing other kids, rape, public humiliation etc... I can't believe it's based on a true story and makes me grateful to be born in the US. The acting is real and comes from some great amateurs. The editting and cinematography make it all so real n interesting. You really never know where the film is headed. The pacing was great and so was the narrative.
The main villian is so evil n young and the cops r as equally bad. One of the strongest anti legalization of drugs movies ive ever seen. Just as you're grown numb over all the deaths, a light of hope comes at the end. Despite it's grotesque topics it manages not to be utterly depressing or dramatic. One of those movies you could watch several times in order to really take in everything. I didn't realize the amulet foreshadowing for instance until later on. An amazing story worth a watch.
