Review of City of God (2002) by Sumit S — 09 Mar 2013
One of the best contemporary films of its or any other time, City of God is a remarkable look at life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro & is a disturbing look at the birth & flourishing world of gangsters, gang-wars & is told from the viewpoint of a young photographer named Rocket.
There are several main characters & the movie covers the evolution of each one of them, even if it's in brief. The direction is brutally honest, the script is uncompromising, the pacing is terrific & the performances from everyone is superb, especially the show stealing stuff by Lil' Dice.
Based on a true story, City of God is violent, shocking & merciless but at the same time, it's an explosive piece of fierce filmmaking. Easily one of world cinema's best films & certainly the best from Brazil.
Don't miss it.
