What makes this film so dramatic and chilling is how the small children so easily are sucked into the horrific violence, so much so, that in essence there is no childhood in The City of God.The machismo of little boys, who as children don't really understand the finality of death, wanting to be like their "heroes" the older boys who are killing anyone who challenges them is so heartbreaking, as is the way that even those who don't want to get involved, do, once they are touched by the violence, and that they are soon as bad as those who had no conscience to begin with.
The people of The City of God are doomed just because of where they live, and there's no way out for them.
