Review of City of God (2002) by Kevin K — 14 Jun 2014
City of God is a striking film that's directed with confidence and style, and its narrative takes us through multiple aspects of life in the slums of Rio in such an elegant and original manner. The films situations are often incredibly severe and disturbing, but the film treats them in an almost casual manner, which underlines how the characters are used to being in these situations.
The films camerawork and editing style is energetic and original, and captures the intensity of every moment perfectly. I don't know if life in Rio is/was as horrifying or severe as the film would suggest, but I found everything incredibly believable.
Also, for a film that's 2 hours long and incredibly dark, there's not a single dull or boring scene here, most likely to do with how energetically presented everything is. Overall, this is an incredible film that I would recommend to anyone.
