Review of City of Ember (2008) by Matt R — 13 Sep 2010
This was a very interesting outing for the Walden Media Group. I highly enjoyed 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe' when I was a child (with the book and cartoon versions). When they made the film, I was somewhat disappointed to say the least.
Now, I did not grow up reading or have even read 'City of Ember', but I believe that this was a homerun for them. With a cast that includes such people as Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, and the spectacular up and coming Saoirse Ronan who has been in such other films as 'Atonement' and 'The Lovely Bones', 'City of Ember' does a good job pulling the audeince into their world.
Set in the distant future, something occurs in the past to force humanity into an underground city known as Ember. There they must stay for 200 years in order for Earth to again become inhabitable. For one reason or another, time is forgotten and it's up to 2 young citizens of the City of Ember to discover the mysteries of the world and find a way to save mankind.
I think that this is the kind of film that is for all ages, which is rare and exciting to find. I especially connected with the post-apocalyptic style which is presented. If you want to see a rivetting tale that is well thought out as well as well acted, then check out 'City of Ember'.
