Review of City Lights (2014) by Alexavier R — 19 Feb 2008
Cinema fans can debate all day as to who the greatest silent film comedian is (Chaplin, Keaton, even Harold Loyd) but to me one thing is certain...City Lights is without a doubt the best silent film comedy.
Chaplin does some of this best comedic work (the boxing scene will have you on the floor) and the central story is moving and selfless. As anyone who sees the movie will note the ending of the film is beyond perfect, and for my money easily one of the ten best film endings ever.
The emotion that happens in the films final moments are something that goes beyond film and elicits the truest human emotions out of everyone. Chaplin could make a situation funny without even trying but in City Lights he combines those situations with a moving, touching, and inspiring story.
The silent era of film didn't see a better movie than City Lights, and it is able to rank with anything done since the advent of sound. Truly a masterpeice and a must see for anyone remotely interested in film.
