Review of City Lights (2014) by Richard D — 18 Aug 2018
Chaplin's tramp befriends a blind flower girl who has mistaken him for a wealthy man. He struggles to get the money together to get her a procedure that will restore her sight. He has also befriended a drunk, depressed millionaire who takes him out on the town, but repeatedly fails to recognize him when he sobers up in the morning.
I think this is Chaplin's best film, even though other films like "The Gold Rush" and "Modern Times" are more consistently funny ... although this film has some really funny sequences like Chaplin's drunken trip to a nightclub and a boxing match he participates in to earn money.
What makes this film such a extraordinary achievement is the end of the film, which is a masterpiece of emotional subtlety and complexity and may just be the most beautiful moment ever committed to film.
