Review of City Lights (2014) by Bach P — 24 May 2008
What I love about "City Lights" is how the film manages to demonstrate all of Chaplin's amazing qualities in one genuine film. Chaplin doesn't particularly do anything different from what he always does here, he just does it perfectly so.
This is one of the few films I have ever seen that manages to do just the right amount of everything it wants. There's the endlessly engaging humor of the Tramp along with the delicate romance of Chaplin that ties together beautifully into one dazzling film.
Many moments simply shine in "City Lights". The boxing match is surely one of the highlights, as is the memorable opening where we whimsically meet Chaplin as he is sleeping on a statue that is being unraveled to the public.
There is not a minute that faults, decades later the film's humor and story still holds up wonderfully. "City Lights" is a film for the ages.
