Review of City Lights (1931) by Joe N — 01 Jun 2008
Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece. When I saw that--it truly, completely belongs to him. He wrote the script, music, directed--the whole nine yards! That is insane. Especially seeing as how the movie was really perfect.
The movie itself is excellent. Though it has no words that you can hear, you understand it completely by the facial expressions of the actors and their pantomiming.
"City Lights" perfectly blends comedy and romance together. The slapstick scenes are loud out loud hilarious whereas the romantic scenes are cute and heartfelt. I liked that Chaplin casted Virginia Cherrill, a cute girl who isn't overly pretty, to be the flower girl. Good call.
The ending I knew ahead of time, but didn't know that it was highly debatable. Or that the pair would not exactly live happily ever after. The best part is is that it's 100% true in society. The ugly truth. Even 77 years after it's release, the topics still pertinent to today.
