Review of City Lights (1931) by Mark S — 07 Feb 2009
A case could be made for this being the best silent film ever made. I'd certainly put it in my top 5. The things Chaplin could do without dialogue...The way in which he got a blind girl to mistake a tramp for a rich man shouldn't be underestimated - moments like that sum up his genius.
The drunken shenanigans and the boxing match both made me laugh out loud and the 'revealing' ending is one of the most emotional moments in cinema history. Brilliant and timeless.
