Review of City Lights (1931) by Ivan M — 03 May 2012
What makes Charlie Chaplin's films so great is that the situations within the film are, while being hilarious and bizzare, also enthrallingly moving. The boxing scene in this masterpiece for example: what takes place on screen is ridiculously comical, the Tramp character hiding behind the referee for 90% of the match, etc.
However, owing to the backstory and the way in which Chaplin places it in the context of the film, we are fascinated and thrilled by the story, even while laughing our heads off. I don't want to give away any of the plot to you, I simply demand that you watch it.
Anyone who dislikes City Lights knows nothing of what's great in cinema.
