Review of City Hall (1996) by David H — 10 Apr 2012
"Murder...Corruption...Cover-up...Scandel.".
An intricate film to say the least, you really have to pay close attention to this one, it's a sharp and sophisticated political/crime thriller that tries a little too hard for it's own good. City Hall is a cock tail of lethal madness, a snappy and uncanny film that highlights the corruption that can happen at the top of city governments, corruption that can and will spill down to the lower tiers of local government. It's kept me watching for awhile, but I found myself losing interest for one reason or another. I found it to be a bit confusing and the fact that it moved at such a fast pace I found myself getting a bit frustrated. Director Harold Becker (Sea Of Love, Malice, Mercury Rising, Domestic Disturbance) helmed this project and it's not one of his best films, but it's not a bad one either. City Hall, as confusing as it was, was a sizzlingly snappy film that's worth watching if you enjoy politics.
Al Pacino is extremely intense in this one, and once again his performance is excellent. He carries the film effortlessly. John Cusack is great. Danny Aiello does well. Bridget Fonda is gorgeous and gives a good performance as well.
