Review of Citizen Kane (1941) by John W — 03 May 2015
Starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, Dorothy Comingore. Still arguably the most impressive directorial debut in film history, Orson Welles' masterpiece, for those who are culturally illiterate, tells the life story in flashback of media magnate Charles Foster Kane as a news reporter investigates the enigmatic Kane after his death.
The thoroughly entertaining story drew the ire of real life tycoon William Randolph Hearst, after whom Kane is clearly patterned. While Welles' imaginative direction and Gregg Toland's innovative deep-focus cinematography never cease to impress, it was oddly the film's screenplay -- largely credited to Herman Mankiewicz -- that won its only Oscar.
